There’s something classic and alluring about a road trip – having a goal that you’re literally driving towards but also excited for what may happen along the way. Unexpected adventures, distractions, encounters and even debacles may occur during the journey.These movies capture the core sense of adventure that road trips invoke and the laughs, gasps and sighs that go along with it.

Tommy Boy (1995)

Chris Farley and David Spade at their best. In the film, they team up for a cross-country sales road trip in hopes of saving Tommy’s late father’s auto parts company. Repeated failures cause ever-increasing tensions between the two that drives the ever-increasing humor in the film. Watch Farley transform a simple task into a frenzied one as he tries to pull away from a gas station.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987)

Steve Martin and John Candy make an unforgettable comic duo in their epic holiday road trip from New York to Chicago. Born in the white-hot fury of the late-'90s, early-2000s teen-sex-comedy boom, Road Trip is the story of young Josh Parker and the consequences of one night's craziness.

Josh's long-term, long-distance girlfriend Tiffany has got silent on him, and so, believing she is dumping him, he accepts the advances of the beautiful Beth Wagner. The next morning, after Beth has left, Josh's friends E.L., Rubin Carver and Barry Manilow (not the Barry Manilow , mind you) come to investigate. Josh reveals that Beth videotaped their amorous adventures, evidence that his friends demand to see. Of course, the tape sitting on the TV contains a romantic message Josh recorded for Tiffany - the "sex with Beth tape" is in an envelope winging its way to Austin, Texas. Right as this realization sinks in, the phone rings - it's Tiffany, apologizing for not answering Josh's calls, as her beloved grandfather just died suddenly. Josh realizes there's only one option: get to Austin before the envelope and prevent Tiffany from ever seeing it.

Thus begins the wacky adventures of Josh, E.L., Rubin and Kyle - the one who actually owns the car - as they travel 1800 miles to try and save Josh's relationship. A quest that will take them through jumping broken bridges in a Ford Taurus, pretending to be members of a national black fraternity, stealing a school bus from a blind chick and discovering why you shouldn't send food back at greasy-spoon diners.

Released in 2000, Road Trip is one of Todd Phillips 's earliest films.

Provides examples of:

• All for Nothing : Played with. It turns out that the trip wasn't strictly necessary after all, because Barry unwittingly replaced the offending part of the tape with a recording of his butt . However, it turns out that Tiffany was going to dump Josh anyway, due to the two having grown apart during their time at college, and Josh's presence at least allows the two to end things amicably and in person, instead of her doing it either over the phone or via a "Dear John" Letter . More importantly, all the people involved undergo Character Development as a result of the trip.
• All Men Are Perverts : Mentioned in the Shower Scene by a topless woman. Barry is even called out for narrating this particular scene with excessive nudity.
• Ass Shove : Happens to E.L. at the sperm bank when he asks the nurse for "assistance". It does provide him with the best orgasm he's ever had. This is even given a Call-Back at the end of the movie when he's bent over again, this time asking for three fingers.
• Awesomeness by Analysis : Rubin's sophisticated calculations for the bridge jump. And it worked out ... kinda. He only predicted that they would make it across, he didn't say anything about the axles breaking or the vehicle exploding after succeeding in the jump.
• Bachelor Auction : One of the extremely rare bachelorette versions, although the auctioneer is careful to point out that purchasing the woman in question in no way confers any suggestion that sex will result.
• Big Beautiful Woman : Rhonda, as played by the late Mia Amber Davis.
• Blatant Lies : "1600s? It says 1951." - "That's the address. OK?"
• Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick : Rubin and E.L. list off reasons in an attempt to justify Josh's cheating on Tiffany . And then comes Kyle's turn ...
• Brick Joke : When E.L. tells Josh that it's not cheating if you're in different area codes. Tiffany tells Josh that she was with one other guy, other than him, when he was away at camp and she was 14 "and in different area codes."
• Butt-Monkey : Poor Kyle.
• Catapult Nightmare : Josh has two of them. Early on, after waking from his bad dream where he envisions his girl friend making out with another dude in the open. Another one when staying at the Manilows'. He has a third one in a deleted extension of that scene.
• Cloud Cuckoolander : Barry. Witness both The Feeding and the Animal Song. Plus, of course, the Running Gag of "Austin... Massachusetts?"
• Cool Old Guy : Grandpa Manilow.
• Don't Explain the Joke : Kyle's joke about dogs and testicles goes awry because of him repeating the punch line.
• Don't Try This at Home : Even if the Taurus hadn't mysteriously exploded, the impact would almost certainly have destroyed the chassis and suspension.
• Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male : The random guy in Boston who had been mistakenly accused of cheating on his girlfriend is shown to get a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown by said girlfriend with never-the-less a baseball bat . How does the crowd who witnesses the situation reacts? They simply just gather around and watched as if the guy deserves it, all because he supposedly cheated .
• This was taken to the point of Intelligence Equals Isolation , as Rubin also mentions how, until he started smoking pot to mellow himself out, he was the only kid to have panic attacks as a result of the Gulf War, being prescribed an adult dosage of Xanax.
• Every Car Is a Pinto : Jumping a broken bridge with a Ford Taurus, the group is dismayed when the wheels fall off. They start to hike to find help - when the car explodes.
• Face Cam : Upon Kyle during the fraternity house party.
• Fainting : Kyle can't take the KKK joke.
• And, of course, Amy Smart topless.
• Flipping the Bird : The blind girl.
• Only Sane Man : Josh
• The Smart Guy : Rubin
• The Pervert: E.L.
• Butt-Monkey : Kyle
• Josh is sanguine
• E.L. is choleric
• Kyle is melancholic
• Rubin is phlegmatic
• Framing Device : Barry tells the story in flashbacks.
• Geeky Analogy : Rubin is able to teach Josh enough philosophy to beat a doctorate test by linking the information to something Josh likes (and will recall easily): wrestling. He even begins his ( two-day ) explanation by giving the Badass Boast of "I could teach a chimpanzee philosophy in two days; I just need something for him to understand." " Socrates is like the Vince McMahon of philosophy. He started it all."
• Gilligan Cut : "Are there any guys out there who are just normal??!" - cut to Barry and his snake.
• The Grunting Orgasm : E.L. during a... special medical inspection.
• Home Porn Movie : The cause of all trouble.
• Irrevocable Message : Not exactly a message, but the main character thinks he accidentally sent a sex tape of him cheating on his girlfriend. The main plot is the gang traveling to get the tape back.
• Knight Templar Parent : Kyle's dad.
• The Last Straw : Scott's character demonstrates he can spit across a ten-foot wide broken bridge. He did, but causing the other end of the bridge to collapse from his spit.
• Limited Wardrobe : The guys all end up wearing the same clothes for several days due to their luggage being destroyed in the explosion . It's noticeable with Josh, whose sweatshirt gets dirtier and sweatier as the film progresses.
• Male Gaze : During the Shower Scene , a woman is explaining how All Men Are Perverts . As she continues the explanation the camera zooms in on her breasts, until they're all we can see. When another girl picks up the thread of her complaints, the camera pans over to her - still with an extremely tight focus on her breasts.
• Musicalis Interruptus : The dramatic music during the Orbital Kiss at the end stops when Barry and the red-haired lady come to their senses.
• Nerd Glasses : The motel clerk.
• Nipple and Dimed : Boobs!
• Long-Distance Relationship : Josh and Tiffany have one.
• Orbital Kiss : In the film's finale. Played for laughs with the transition from Josh/Beth to Berry/red-haired Lady.
• Papa Wolf : Kyle's insanely strict father takes this one a bit too far.
• Product Placement : Rubin appears on the cover of High Times magazine.
• The Quest : For a sex tape.
• Raging Stiffie : Grandpa Manilow and the goddamn Viagra.
• Revenge Is a Dish Best Served : The asshole cook that gets upset about Kyle asking him to take powered sugar off his toast (a very mild request said very meekly by the nicest guy of the protagonists in a complete inversion of Unsatisfiable Customer ) retaliates by licking the sugar off and then shitting on the toast before handing it back. What is more disgusting is the fact that Kyle never figures this out and actually likes the taste.
• Road Trip Plot : Unsurprisingly.
• Secret Handshake : How Rubin get them into the fraternity house.
• Sex as Rite-of-Passage : Kyle experiences this after scoring with Rhonda. It allows him to stand up to his father.
• Shower Scene : Described by one of the characters and shown to the viewer - put on pause when an actual woman questioned it, the question is Hand Waved and we return to naked goodness.
• Short Cuts Make Long Delays : Wherein the shortcut leads over a Broken Bridge . "Of course it's difficult, it's a short-cut. If it was easy it would just be the way ."
• Stalker with a Crush : Jacob is a very creepy example of this when it comes to Beth.
• Talking Animal : Grandpa Manilow's dog.
• Tempting Fate : After the bridge jump, Rubin tells Josh that the cars tires just need fixing and they will only lose half a day on the trip. The car promptly explodes.
• Tiny Guy, Huge Girl : Kyle and Rhonda.
• Unfortunate Item Swap : With the video tapes. There would have been no plot without it.
• Unrated Edition : Minor changes, mostly the extension of the Shower Scene .
• Unreliable Narrator : The main story is told through the eyes of Barry, a campus tour guide who's not playing with a full deck . Barry wasn't even present on the titular road trip. As such, the story has some highly improbable elements.

• Vomit Discretion Shot : Josh's girlfriend is about to vomit during his nightmare vision, but then suddenly wakes up.
• Wacky Fratboy Hijinx : The boys of Xi Chi plant a Klan hood on Kyle, accusing him of bigotry. When Kyle faints in terror, the boys reveal it to be a prank and a loud party ensues.
• Watch the Paint Job : The precious Ford Taurus.
• Wild Teen Party : A relatively mild example near the beginning, with a good-natured "girl auction" taking place in the front room and an least one group upstairs experimenting with lesbianism and group sex.
• You Have Waited Long Enough : E.L. does this on Josh, directing him to Beth.

10 of the Most Memorable Restaurant Food Scenes in Movies

I can assure that this was not a fun list to come up with.  I have to admit I did a lot while coming up with these scenes. At first I nearly threw up, then I kind of laughed at some of it. Then I nearly threw up again because I realized that I just laughed at some of it. But one must admit that some of the most powerful scenes in movies come from scenes that take place in a restaurant. Whether it’s humor or vulgarity (in this case it’s a little bit of both) the audience is drawn in by the sheer amazement of how absurd the movie can get in these moments.

While all types of scenes take place in restaurants I decided on ones that involved food specifically.  Here are some of the nastiest restaurant food scenes in movies

Remember that this was Horatio Sanz?  Again, a scene that I highly don’t doubt actually happens in real life.

I’ve got no words for this vulgarity.  Nasty.

Hot Pepper Scene in Dumb and Dumber

This may be behind the scenes but this is absolutely insane.

Forced Cannibalism – The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover

I almost put the Hannibal scene in this but that wasn’t in a restaurant, this was.

What’s coolest about this scene is that this is the actual guy who was in Alien.

Josh Parker ( Breckin Meyer ) and chums undertake a cross-country dash, from ‘Ithaca, New York State’ to ‘Austin, Texas’, to retrieve a compromising videotape posted to his girlfriend in this lacklustre (though hugely successful) addition to the college sexcom genre. The film was shot in the South, mainly around Atlanta , Cumming and Lawrenceville , Georgia , and in Nashville , Tennessee .

The campus of the fictitious ‘Ithaca University’ is the University of Georgia in Athens (though the opening aerial shot is of Harvard University , Cambridge , Massachusetts , later recycled in the same director’s Old School ).

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville is the real thing, but the ‘University of Austin’ is Emory University , Atlanta , and ‘Memphis’ is Broadway , Nashville .

The foursome stop for breakfast in the Gwinnett Diner, Highway 124 at Gwinnett Drive, Lawrenceville , Georgia . You’ve missed your opportunity to sample the French toast – the diner closed in mid-2011.

Hollywood has always had a soft spot for road trip movies, and some have become memorable not just for what was shown on screen, but what the spirit of the movie meant for the people who saw them.

Take "Easy Rider" for example, whose no-rules approach launched a new way that movies were made for decades. Or "Thelma & Louise," which was as much about female empowerment as it was about a movie about two people on the run from the law.

"Almost Famous" (2000)

Cameron Crowe's love letter to the 1970s rock and roll scene, which he covered as a writer for Rolling Stone, is a fun look at adolescence, fame, and highlights the non-stop grind of a band being "on the road."

"The Blues Brothers" (1980)

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd play two brothers on a mission from God. Trying to get on the straight-and-narrow after getting out of prison, Jake Blues (Belushi) and his brother Elwood (Aykroyd) decide to help raise the money the Catholic home they were raised in needs to stay open. That leads to a road trip around Illinois to get the band back together.

"Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" (2006)

With the help of director Larry Charles, Sacha Baron Cohen creates one of the funniest road trip movies ever made as he takes his character, Borat, to America to marry Pamela Anderson. But in the process, the movie highlights the US itself, as Borat travels the country doing everything from singing the Kazakhstan national anthem at a rodeo to hanging out with some fraternity kids.

"Dumb and Dumber" (1994)

In this Farrelly brothers classic, friends Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) are convinced the gas man is out to get them after the death of their bird, so they decide to drive to Aspen to hand-deliver a briefcase the beautiful Mary (Lauren Holly) "forgot" at the airport. Oh, and they are hitting the road in a truck that's made up to look like a dog.

"Easy Rider" (1969)

It's the movie that launched the "New Hollywood" era of the 1970s and was made with little money and lots of drugs.

Directed by Dennis Hopper, the Hollywood bad boy also stars alongside Peter Fonda as two hippie bikers (Jack Nicholson also shows up) who travel from LA to New Orleans after cashing in on smuggling cocaine from Mexico. On their freewheeling trip, they find an America that's split between the stuffy establishment and the younger generation that is starving for change.

"The End of the Tour" (2015)

The days of conversations between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) are beautifully profiled in director James Ponsoldt's intimate story that has the two men interacting while on the road for Wallace's book tour.

"Into the Wild" (2007)

Based on a true story, Christopher McCandless' quest to go off the grid and hitchhike to Alaska to live in the wilderness is a powerful exploration of human desire and the kindness of strangers.

"It Happened One Night" (1934)

Frank Capra's famous movie is romantic comedy at its best. Claudette Colbert plays a spoiled heiress running from home, and Clark Gable is a reporter who finally thinks he's found a story that will get him some attention as he follows her to New York. But it will be forever known for its hitchhiking scene in which Colbert's character gets them a ride by pulling up her skirt to show off her legs.

"Little Miss Sunshine" (2006)

Filled with an all-star cast including Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin, and Abigail Breslin, we follow a dysfunctional family as they jump in a VW bus to drive the young Olive (Breslin) on a cross-country trip to the finals of a beauty pageant she's competing in.

"Logan" (2017)

Marking the coda of the Hugh Jackman era as Wolverine, director James Mangold delivers a somber drama of the superhero's final days. Here he and Charles Xavier set out to drive a young mutant to a refuge in North Dakota. That sounds simple, but it definitely isn't.

"Magic Mike XXL" (2015)

In this fantastic sequel to the 2012 original, Mike (Channing Tatum) sets out on the road with the remaining members of the Kings of Tampa in a food truck to Myrtle Beach for one final performance.

"Midnight Run" (1988)

Robert De Niro is fantastic in this foul-mouthed comedy as bounty hunter Jack Walsh who plans to cash in when he tracks down a sneaky accountant (played by Charles Grodin) who has jumped bail.

But with the FBI, other bounty hunters, and the mob also trying to get their hands on his bounty, things aren't easy for Jack.

"The Motorcycle Diaries" (2004)

Based on the Che Guevara memoir he wrote before becoming the Marxist revolutionary, Gael García Bernal plays young Guevara who, in 1952, went on a trip across South America with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna). The experience shaped Guevara's life as it showed him the injustices of the world.

"The Muppet Movie" (1979)

Marking the first time the Muppets appear on the big screen, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and the rest of the gang go on a cross-country drive to Hollywood in hopes of making it big. A load of cameos, songs, and hilarity occur along the way.

"National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983)

This classic from director Harold Ramis stars Chevy Chase as one of his most memorable characters, Clark W. Griswold, the ambitious father whose vacation plans always never work out.

Clark takes the family cross-country to Walley World and in the process leaves chaos in his wake.

"On the Road" (2012)

Based on the iconic Jack Kerouac novel, Sam Riley plays the book's narrator, Sal Paradise, who after meeting Dean (Garrett Hedlund) and Marylou (Kristen Stewart), head on a free-spirited road trip across the country.

"Pee-wee's Big Adventure" (1985)

A loose parody of Vittorio De Sica's classic "Bicycle Thieves," Tim Burton makes his own classic around the zany antics of Paul Reubens' hit character Pee-wee Herman.

The movie follows the "boy" as he goes to search of his stolen bike, which he's been told by a psychic is in the basement of the Alamo (spoiler alert: there's no basement in the Alamo).

"Planes, Trains & Automobiles" (1987)

Steve Martin and John Candy play two men who suddenly have to become travel companions as they try to get home for the holidays. Written and directed by John Hughes, Martin and Candy together are a delight.

"Rain Man" (1988)

Tom Cruise plays sleazy Charlie Babbitt and Dustin Hoffman is his brother Raymond, who suffers from savant syndrome. Hoping to cash in on the fortune Raymond got from their father, Charlie sets the two out on a cross-country trip leading to a lot of self-discovery.

"Road Trip" (2000)

Of course "Road Trip" was going to be on this list. Todd Phillips' insane raunchy comedy about four college friends on a race against time to retrieve a sex tape sent in the mail to one of their girlfriends is always a fun watch.

"Smokey and the Bandit" (1977)

Burt Reynolds teams with his pal and longtime stunt double Hal Needham for his first directing effort, and it would go on to become a classic road trip movie.

Reynolds plays a fast-driving bootlegger who has to transport 400 cases of Coors beer safely from Texarkana to Atlanta. But things get complicated when Reynolds picks up a runaway bride (played by Sally Field) along the way.

"The Straight Story" (1999)

In one of David Lynch's most traditional storytelling offerings, Richard Farnsworth plays a man who sets out on a trip via riding a lawnmower to make things right with his ill brother.

The story is based on a real-life event, in which Alvin Straight traveled 240 miles from Iowa to Wisconsin on a lawnmower.

"Stranger Than Paradise" (1984)

Jim Jarmusch's second feature film follows Willie and his friend Eddie as they set out on a road trip to Cleveland to visit Willie's cousin from Hungary, Eva.

The movie went on to be regarded as a landmark work in the independent film world for its unconventional long takes and do-it-yourself aesthetic.

"Thelma & Louise" (1991)

Ridley Scott's look at the road-trip-turned-manhunt adventure of friends Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) is arguably more powerful today because of the #MeToo than when it opened in the early 1990s.

"Tommy Boy" (1995)

Perhaps the best Chris Farley/David Spade collaboration, in this one Farley plays an underachieving college graduate who suddenly has to travel the nation (with Spade as the geeky sidekick) to keep the accounts for his auto-parts family business after his father dies. This one truly shows off Farley's high-energy comedy greatness.

"Y Tu Mamá También" (2001)

Director Alfonso Cuarón received a best screenplay Oscar nomination with his brother Carlos for this powerful road trip movie that made Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal international stars.
